Knitting Away The Day

In the spirit of trying something new and venturing beyond my comfort zone, I am learning to knit.

While watching my sister crochet and my cousin needlepoint, I concluded the time was right to add a new craft to our family while also finding another creative outlet that doesn’t involve television. And what better time to learn this new hobby than during the first few weeks of a new year.

My mother-in-law also inspired me to knit. She learned from her grandmother and has been knitting up a storm ever since. Over the years she has given me lovely, handcrafted scarves that quickly became my favorite winter weather accessories. It’s my hope to also knit a scarf or two, along with cozy blankets, and perhaps a few potholders.

The hardest lesson thus far is patience. I am not terrifically crafty by trade, but am willing to table my fleeting frustration with the hope that practice makes perfect.

I taught myself to knit about 3 months again using YouTube and a site called Ravelry. So far I knitted a hat for my husband and I am currently working on a heel head scarf. Have fun with your new craft!

Good for you, Dawn! I will definitely check out the Ravelry website, as well as YouTube videos. Every little bit helps :-)

My mom taught me to knit when I was in high school and it always seems to be the craft that I come back to. I find it so calming. I can completely shut down my brain while I’m knitting, but perhaps that’s also because I’ve been knitting for so long. Although my knitting usually does involve watching TV. I’d love to see what you make!

Megan, thanks so much. I need to practice a bit more, but I can already sense the calm that arrives while I’m knitting. I can’t even how much more calm I’ll become when I actually know what I’m doing!
