should you be keeping score

Artists/groups I’ve listened to on my iPod during the last week:

Rufus Wainwright
Interpol
My Morning Jacket
Belle & Sebastian
Air
The Shins
The Strokes
Ben Lee
Stars
Sea and Cake
Death Cab for Cutie
Ryan Adams

That is all. Now, I must go get beautiful for work. G’day.

chess club kicks ass

Here’s why:

These kids were awesome, as was their teacher. Way to go, Bellevue East!

“i’m wide awake, it’s morning”

How the hell can it be 7 a.m. already? I woke up around 5:30 this morning, couldn’t fall back to sleep. I shut off my alarm so it wouldn’t sound at 6 a.m. I got up, watched some of the morning news, did two loads of laundry and emptied my dishwasher. I sit at my Macintosh to catch up on emails when — bam! — I look up and see that it’s nearing 7 a.m. I’m still sleepy, too, damnit.

a storm’s coming!

I just took this picture from my front porch. This is looking north. It appears a storm is headed our way. Take cover! Take cover!

my ears, my ears

Across from my home office is the bedroom of my 13- or 14-year-old neighbor kid. Right now he’s practicing his guitar. Since it’s nice outside, both our windows are open. I don’t recognize the song he’s attempting to play, but at least he’s trying, you know?

welcome…to the bellevue leader

I was camera-happy this afternoon at work. Here’s a few photos of the place and people I’m with for 40 hours each week.

Our little newsroom. My desk is in the top right corner, in front of Jason (who’s chatting on the phone in this photo).

A close-up view of my desk.

Jason and Margaret, pretending to look busy. They’re really not.

Eric, our sports editor, talking to somebody on the phone. My guess is he’s making a tee time for tomorrow.

Jason listening to my iPod. Again, pretending to look busy, or deep in thought. He’s not.

i love that smell

I could smell freshly cut grass this afternoon. Pair that with the light breeze and sunshine, today was near-perfect, except for the rip in the back of my dress. Oy, vey…

so very sad

A fire broke out in an Old Market building this afternoon. It’s too early to tell, but my guess is that the building will be destroyed.

It’s just so very, very sad.

Here’s the story from Omaha.com: http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np=0&u_pg=1636&u_sid=1058551

you know it’s spring when…

…my elderly neighbor across the street puts the “KEEP OFF THE GRASS” sign in his front yard. Honestly. There’s about eight kids in our neighborhood, none of whom set foot on his precious green grass. Give me a break.

i’m starting to dislike mondays

Yesterday was production day at the paper, as is every Monday. The days are just so damn long, I get overwhelmed at times. I am, however, kind of proud of my stories in this week’s paper. I’ll post links to ’em when they’re posted on our Web site.

After production, I had to cover a Bellevue Public Schools board meeting last night. Not fun, especially when one of the board members — during the meeting — enjoys pointing out what our newspaper is doing wrong. Why not just call me during the week? Why address me in a public forum? He even looks in my direction, and makes eye contact with me. I just don’t understand.

While Mondays are a bitch, Tuesdays are a blessing. I only work a few hours, since I pulled a 14-hour day yesterday. I’m going to shop for a bathing suit today, I think. I need a new one for my trip to California next month. I saw one on Target’s Web site, but am not sure if it’s sold in stores. We’ll see what I find.
