the chat before the keynote

My friend, Steve, is in San Francisco for Macworld. Here’s our iChat transcript, just 90 minutes before today’s keynote.

9:02 AM
Wendy Townley: Steve! Where are you? At the Moscone?
Steve Houlton: gettin ready to leave for Moscone
Wendy Townley: Very good. I’m so excited for you!
Steve Houlton: it’s not the same without you’all
Wendy Townley: I know. It feels weird to be at home and not in San Francisco, waiting for Steve Jobs to begin. What’s the weather like in S.F. today?
Steve Houlton: well too early for sun
Steve Houlton: been in the forties
Wendy Townley: Not too bad. Are you staying w/ Kris?
Steve Houlton: yep; looking like chance of rain today
Wendy Townley: While I’m not in S.F. right now, I’m in an iChat room with people to talk about the keynote. The next best thing, I suppose.
Steve Houlton: definetly
Steve Houlton: are you at work
Wendy Townley: Nope, home! I’m taking the morning off so I can stay up-to-date on the keynote.
Wendy Townley: I’m on dial-up, so I can’t stream it, though. Ugh.
Steve Houlton: sweet
Wendy Townley: Did you get your press pass stuff figured out?
Steve Houlton: yes
Steve Houlton: did it on a sunday ;
Steve Houlton: confirmed on monday
Steve Houlton: fast
Wendy Townley: Very good…
Steve Houlton: thanks
Wendy Townley:
Steve Houlton: time to go; look for me at the keynote
Wendy Townley: Will do, Steve. Have fun!

as the clock ticks…

We’re just four hours away from Steve Jobs’ keynote at Macworld San Francisco 2004. Word on the street is that Steve will announce new iPods, plus new software. Time will tell!

it’s just me and the boys

Do you think it’s odd that a female, such as myself, can more easily sustain friendships with boys than girls? Case in point: After looking at my life recently, including both social interactions and my work, I realized that nearly 95 percent of those I come in contact with are boys. On the editorial staff at the Bellevue Leader, I am one of only two females. The four males on staff have become wonderful, close friends of mine. The female and I are merely co-workers. That’s it.

At my part-time, weekend job, I am, again, the only female. The boys and I get along just fine. We watch Saturday and Sunday sports. We talk about the latest sports news from the past week.

During my “down” time, when I’m out with friends, rarely are females present. It’s just me…and more boys.

Why is this? I have such a difficult time maintaining any type of lasting friendship, workplace or otherwise, with females. Perhaps it’s because I eat poorly (candy, cookies, sugary breakfast cereals, frozen pizza, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches); spend 20 minutes (that’s including a shower) getting ready each day; or that I swear profusely (insert your favorite expletive here). I can’t cry in public or display any type of “weak” behavior around others. I don’t wear shoes that hurt my feet or clothes that make me uncomfortable.

For whatever reason, I’ve found my best and longest-lasting friendships in boys – not girls. I relate to boys of any age much better than females my own age (or younger).

To most people’s surprise, I was in a sorority my first two years of college. I made some good friends, but found the whole experience to be too emotional, too tiresome, too feminine. Problems were rarely discussed in the open; rather, they were meticulously dissected in secret conversations in a bathroom or bar.

This all isn’t to discount, however, the few female friends I have today (one of whom is my 20-year-old sister). It’s merely a field to examine how different I feel to other females my age.

I do enjoy getting all “girly” on various days, wearing my favorite skirts or dresses with cute (yet sensible) shoes. However, that’s where the “girly” part ends. If I stub my toe or hit my leg on my desk at work, I’ll still yell some awful, awful swear word out of frustration.

Fuck that.

calm down!

Ever wonder what the term “emo” means? Check out Chuck Werner’s emotional essay, “What the Fuck is Emo?”

It’s quite comical how Werner gets all fired up about a sub-culture he despises.

Here’s an excerpt:

The Emo Kids have one-upped the Goth Cookies, though. It’s already uncool to be Emo, and I’ll bet you can’t even name two Emo bands. Sure, it’s cool to have pouty lips and wear geeky glasses when you have perfect eyesight, but it’s definitely not cool to be Emo. And the Emo Kids will cross their arms over their one-size-too-small, late-70s-kitsch t-shirts and make wry, sarcastic smiles while they calmly inform you that they’re not Emo. Whatever. Nice sweater, Poindexter.

something a little different…

Out with the pinks, in with the purples for 2004.

What do you think?

a kick-ass time had by all

Last night marked a first for my home: about 15 people were on hand for a party! We drank beer, listened to my iPod, drank beer, ate snacks, drank beer, swapped stories, drank beer and told jokes. Many of my guests were friends from high school, although a few were people I met in college. It was great! Everyone headed home shortly past 1 this morning.

I took photos last night and will post ’em later today :-)

drinks all around
