New Year’s Eve Ideas, Please
I’m toying with the idea of throwing a New Year’s Eve party. Most of the parties Matthew and I host typically feature an interactive board game for all to enjoy, but I’d like to mix things up a bit.
I have a book of questions that might be fun to bring out at the party, with questions like, “If you could only eat one type of food for 30 days, what would it be and why?”
Any other ideas for fun party games? Inquire within.
MySpace
So what’s the story with MySpace? At a party over the weekend I had a handful of people describe it as “addicting.” I already have this blog; why do I need a MySpace account, as well?
A U2 Review
Prologue: This review is delayed due to a 24-hour flu bug I came down with after the show Thursday night. Here’s to good health!
Random thoughts following Thursday’s Kanye West/U2 show at Qwest Center Omaha:
• The crowd was much more mature than music fans who saw Dave Matthews Band last month. That made the experience Thursday night much more enjoyable.
• Although I had difficulty understanding Kanye’s lyrics — sound problems, perhaps? — he put on a great show. Lots of dialogue with the audience, which I always find an important part of any concert experience.
• The technical/production aspect of U2’s performance was amazing. Lots of color. Lots of light. Continuously changing, which made you not want to take your eyes off the stage.
• The ellipse you may have read about really brought Bono, the Edge and the rest of the band close to the crowd. The changing colors around the ellipse was awesome, as well.
• The music: non-stop audibly delicious. Highlights for me were “One” and “Mysterious Ways.”
• Bono spent about 20 minutes promoting his One.org campaign, which I felt was time well spent.
Tonight: U2
Tonight Matthew and I are braving the cold to see Kanye West and U2. I’m not the biggest U2 fan out there, but I am quite curious about what songs they’ll play.
And if Bono is as short as everyone says he is.
Bob Dylan Leaps To XM
[From Pitchfork]
The times, they are a-changin’. XM Satellite Radio announced today that Bob Dylan has signed on to become their latest DJ. Come March, the living legend will host a weekly show on XM’s Deep Tracks channel. In addition to a hand-picked playlist by the master himself, the hour-long program will feature commentary on music and other topics, interviews with special guests, and on-air replies to e-mail from XM subscribers.
“Songs and music have always inspired me,” Dylan said in a press release. “A lot of my own songs have been played on the radio, but this is the first time I’ve ever been on the other side of the mic. It’ll be as exciting for me as it is for XM.”
Dylan joins a roster of DJs that already includes Snoop Dogg and Ellen DeGeneres. We’ll just let that sink in for a second.
How much money is XM paying Dylan to do this? The answer, my friend, is bl– ah, you know the rest.
Why I Love My iPod
While listening to my iPod on shuffle at work earlier today, the following two songs played in the following order:
(1) “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie.
(2) “I Will Survive” by Cake.
The first song, a pure love story, with the whole ‘Til Death Do You Part sort of vibe.
The second, as Royal Tanenbaum would say, “a kind of f#$% you to the Old Man.”
How often do you hear songs that have similar titles but such opposed approaches?
I love you, iPod.
All Together Now…
Question: What’s your favorite Christmas carol?
Mine: Today, it’s “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan.
